Summer vacation can be both a wonderful time for less structured activities, but it’s also a perfect time for your child to catch up and maintain what they’ve worked so hard to learn this past year in school. Avoiding the “summer slide” is a concern for parents and teacher alike.
In addition to the Peace of Mind Summer Camp program (learn more here), we’ve compiled a list of ideas for you the help your children stay engage in learning all summer long.
Pollinate their minds. Planting garden is a fun way to teach kids about the environment. A great way to bond with kids as well as teach them, gardening expands minds by showing children how to care for a living thing and allows them to literally reap the rewards of their efforts. Getting kids to eat their vegetables is easier when they’re invested in the process.
The Library. The library system in Washington County is wonderful. A simple visit to the library allows children to choose books that are appropriate for their age and reading skill and helps their minds stay active over the summer. Many of our local libraries also have daily storytime for children of all age groups.
Your Family Tree. Mapping your family tree is a wonderful way to learn about your family history and connect with your family members. The process is also a lovely entry into history lessons about our world.
Summertime Garage Sales. Teaching children the value of money is an important life lesson. Attending garage sales and having your own is a way to clear out unwanted items from your home and it teaches kids about money.
Meal Preps. During the school year family meals can be rushed to say the least. Take advantage of the less crazy pace of life in the summer to engage your kids in making family meals. Another important life skill is cooking nutritious meals. If you’re gardening with your kids, meal prep is the perfect time make those veggies taste great.
Bug Hunt! Science, discovery and bugs – oh my! Exploring our big, beautiful state in search of beautiful bugs is a fun summer activity. The variety of bugs you’ll find may surprise you!
